Grid drawing generator

The classic grid method, minus the ruler work: enter your original size and target scale, and print a ready-to-use grid sheet for enlarging or reducing any drawing, photo, or plan.

Enter your original size and target scale — get a printable grid sheet for the grid method: draw the same grid on your canvas, then copy the drawing square by square. PDF downloads instantly, free.

Using the grid method

The grid method is the oldest way to scale a drawing by hand — artists have used it since at least Albrecht Dürer, and it needs no instruments beyond a straightedge. Divide the original into equal squares, divide the destination canvas into the same number of squares (larger or smaller), and redraw the contents of each square in its new cell. Every line you draw is short, local, and easy to check against a neighbour cell, so proportions hold even at large enlargements where measuring alone gets error-prone.

This generator does the arithmetic and the drafting for you. It applies your scale ratio to the original dimensions, lays out a grid whose cells keep the canvas aspect ratio, and renders a clean printable sheet with cell coordinates numbered on every edge — so you can note “the eye sits at D3” on your sketch and find the same cell instantly.

Need the exact numbers instead? The scale calculator converts between ratios, percentages, and units — a natural companion before you print.

Frequently asked questions

How does the grid method enlarge a drawing?

Draw (or print) an identical grid of squares over your original and a larger grid with the same number of squares on your canvas. Because both grids have the same count of cells, you can copy the drawing square by square and the proportions stay exact — the grid does the scaling for you.

What grid size should I use?

More columns give finer reference points for detailed work; fewer columns are faster for simple compositions. 8–12 columns is a good start for most drawings. The generator keeps the cell aspect ratio true to your canvas, so any column count works.

Can I print the grid at actual size?

Yes — print the PDF at 100% scale (no 'fit to page'). When the target canvas fits the sheet, the printed grid matches it one-to-one. For larger canvases, the sheet is a proportional reference: draw the same grid, in the same cell count, directly on your canvas.

How is this different from a scale calculator?

A scale calculator gives you the target dimensions in numbers. The grid generator turns that ratio into a printable artifact: a gridded sheet you can hold, tape to a board, and draw on. They pair well — calculate the ratio, print the grid.
